Alone high on the mountain in full winter conditions, the wind began to increase and I was in a white out. My face and eyes were being blasted by snow and ice and I couldn't see. Navigation was impossible and I knew there was a cornice and big drop to my right side, somewhere. Putting on my goggles, everything felt more comfortable and less stressful. The world instantly felt a calmer place to be.

Summit attempts start the day or evening before when plans are made, you pack your bag and head for an early night tucked in warm comfortable sleeping bags. Lying there pretending to sleep as the brain runs through what could possibly happen the following day. Going over scenarios of what it will be like heading in to the unknown terrain not climbed through yet. Will you be strong enough? Will the body cope with extra altitude? Will the weather allow you to go up there at all? Will there be success?
