Open Gold DofE Practice and Qualifying Expeditions delivered with your success in mind.

Our extensive expedition programme covers all levels of the DofE Award. The expeditions are designed for individuals, who, for a variety of reasons, have not been able to complete either expedition with their own school or group.

Gold expedition venues include:

  • Keswick, The Lake District
  • Ullswater, The Lake District
  • Dark Peak, Peak District

 SamplItinerary - GOLD Training & Practice Expedition

DofE GOLD TRAINING & PRACTICE WALKING EXPEDITION

Day 1- WELCOME EVENING
The programme will commence at 14:00
Its important for the teams to get to know each other quickly and to begin to perform as a team. On arrival our intructors will begin this process by supervising team tasks. Training topics covered:

  • Putting up tents
  • Route planning
  • Group cooking task

Accommodation
YHA or bunk house accomodation in shared dormitory rooms
Meals
Ingredients for your evening meal will be provided. Your team task will be to prepare a meal for everyone to eat.

Day 2 - INTENSIVE TRAINING 
Based from a bunkhouse or YHA and delivered by our highly qualified and experienced staff these sessions will introduce the essential expedition skills and navigation techniques. Teams will also plan their Practice Walking Expedition and under guidance, they will produce a route card for each day. Training topics covered:

  • Navigation skills in difficult terrain
  • Navigation skills
  • Leave no Trace
  • Route planning
  • Camp craft skills

Accommodation
YHA or bunk house accomodation in shared dormitory rooms
Meals
Breakfast provided
Lunch You will need to supply your own packed lunch 
Ingredients for your evening meal will be provided. Your team task will be to prepare a meal for everyone to eat. 

Day 3 - INTENSIVE TRAINING 
Based from a bunkhouse or YHA your instructor these sessions will continue to introduce the essential expedition skill and navigation techniques. Training topics covered:

  • Navigation skills in difficult terrain
  • Emergency scenarios
  • Navigation skills
  • Leave no Trace

Accommodation
Camping in shared 2 or 3 person tents
Meals

Day 4/5/6 - PRACTICE WALKING EXPEDITION 
This will include overnight camps. Teams will receive additional essential training and guidance by our leaders until they're confident that the teams are ready to support themselves. Once our leaders are happy, the teams will be supervised remotely. On arriving at camp, our leaders will supervise the camping and cooking activities to ensure safety. Each team will be de-briefed by their leader.

 Itinerary - GOLD Qualifying Expedition

DofE GOLD QUALIFYING WALKING EXPEDITION

Day 1 - WELCOME EVENING
The programme will commence at 14:00.
On arrival at the expedition base, there will be a full kit check and last minute planning facilitated by one of our instructors. Topics covered:

  • Route planning
  • Kit packing and equipment
  • Food requirements

Accommodation
YHA or bunk house accomodation in shared dormitory rooms
Meals
Ingredients for your evening meal will be provided. Your team task will be to prepare a meal for evenyone to eat.

Day 2 - REFRESHER DAY
Today you and your team will spend in the hills facilitated by one of our instructors. There will also be a refresher on:

  • Core navigation skills
  • Emergency scenarios
  • Route planning

Accommodation
YHA or bunk house accomodation in shared dormitory rooms
Meals
Ingredients for your evening meal will be provided. Your team task will be to prepare a meal for evenyone to eat.

Day 3/4/5/6 - QUALIFYING WALKING EXPEDITION
Complete the planned route. The DofE gold qualifying expedition will involve being observed using remote supervision and will be assessed by one of our DofE accredited assessors. Following the expedition, the assessor will fully debrief the teams.

The programme will finish at approx. 17:00.

 What's Included in the Price
  • Bunkhouse or YHA accommodation
    Shared dormitory accommodation is provided for the first nights of your training. This provides us with a relaxed training venue and allows you to get the most from the first couple of training days, without having to worry about carrying all your kit and you are able to easily dry your clothes.
  • Food
    Whilst you are staying in the bunkhouse you will be provided with 2 x breakfasts and 2 x evening meals. You and your team will be provided with the ingredients and instructions of how to prepare your meals. This is a great opportunity to get to know your team mates.

    Camping will either be on a campsite or wild camping, depending on your expedition.

  • Comprehensive training
    Covering all aspects of the DofE syllabus and delivered by our highly experienced and qualified staff.
  • Supervision by Highly Qualified staff
    Our highly experienced instructor team will be supervising yo throughout the expedition. All of our staff are a minimum of Summer Mountain Leader qualified.
  • DofE Accredited Assessors
    For the qualifying expedition only - they will help you feel relaxed and encourage you towards completing your Duke of Edinburgh expedition.
  • GPS Tracking devices
    In addition to our usual comprehensive supervision and safety mangement systems we also track each team with GPS trackers.
  • The Adventure Element Multi-Functional Headwear
    All participants receive one of our 'Limited Edition Multi-Functinal Headwear' scalves.

 

 What do you need to arrange?
  • Your transport to and from the expedition venue.
  • Your personal clothing and some camping equipment.

NOTES

Arrival on the first day of your programme is at 14:00.
Programme includes training sessions and route planning following the DofE framework before heading out in to the hills. This means there is no requirement to of had previous Gold expedition experience in order to attend.

  • It is a DofE requirement that Training & Practice Expeditions take place at a different time and location than the Qualifying Expedition. For example - Both can take place in the Lake District but one in Keswick, Lake District and the other in Ullswater, Lake District.
  • Participants completing both your Training & Practice Expedition and Qualifying Expedition with us, please choose 2 dates which are at least 2-3 weeks apart.
  • Participants wanting to take part in a Qualifying Expedition must complete a Practice Expedition in the appropriate environment and at the correct level. This could be with a different provider. The expedition must be signed off on your eDofE record or log book and you must provide us with evidence.
