01.The Brief

With their ever-increasing cohort size, North Bromsgrove High School approached us looking for a model that would provide a quality training and assessment experience at a price point that was available to all.

02.Our Approach

Following lengthy discussions with the school DofE Manager, we designed a 4 day programme that could be partly based from the school site. This dramatically reduced the transport costs associated with the expedition. The key details of our 4 day Bronze programme include days 1&2 are based from the school site. We include a full day of training activities within the school grounds followed by a full day out on a navigation walk. Days 3&4 are the qualifying expedition and is based in an area close to the school. This allows parents to drop off and pick up, reducing school logistics and staffing demand.

03.The Programme Outcome

Being able to run the expedition section within a single week is an attractive model for a school. Following the success with North Bromsgrove, other schools have now adopted the approach and it is rapidly becoming our most popular Bronze level offering

As a DofE expedition provider, it is easy to see the difficulties when we ask young people to take themselves away from their phones and go offline for a few days. Can DofE expeditions balance the double edged sword that is phone technology to help more young people experience the outdoors?
