Ghyll Scrambling,(sometimes known as gorge walking or canyoning) is an exhilarating and adrenaline filled wet and wild activity for groups young and old. "Ghyll" is the Lake District word for a mountain stream. 

Being led and kept safe by our friendly and knowledgable instructors, you will have a jam-packed activity full of excitement and adrenaline. You'll either ascend or descend the 'ghyll' and along the way you will:

  • Swim across pools
  • Slide down polished rock chutes
  • Dive in to deep rushing water pools
  • Climb up waterfalls
  • Jump into deep plunge pools.

What do you need to know about Ghyll Scrambling?

Ghyll Scrambling, gorge walking or canyoning as its sometimes known as is one of the most popular activities in the Keswick area. There is no denying it, it's ours too. It's the ultimate Lake District wet and wild activity suitable for everyone!

This activity is wet but incredibly good fun for little people and adults a like. Ideal for a group or family adventure experience if you're staying in the Lake District area.  We use Stoneycroft Ghyll in the Newlands Valley, but other locations are available.

Don't worry if you're a little nervous, our excellent and patient instructors will guide you on each challenge. If you really don't fancy one of the challenges, it is possible to just walk around. There is no pressure!

It can certainly be cold in the water, so we provide full wetsuits to keep you warm. We will keep you moving to stay warm but you may get a bit chilly. Bring a go for it attitude and push your boundaries!

Directions
From Keswick: Leave Keswick on the A66 west, towards Workington and Cockermouth, turn left into the village of Braithwaite, passing the campsite and taking the first road on the left, signposted to the Newlands Valley, turn left over the bridge and past the village shop on continue on this road, about 800m after the cattle grid is crossed a layby will be seen to the left of the road, just after the entrance to Uzzicar Farm. We will meet on this layby.

  • Please travel in as few cars as possible, there is not a lot of parking available.
  • Your instructor will meet you at the venue.
  • You will be sent full joining instructions on booking you place.
