Who is the Discover Hill Skills Course For?

Maybe you have experience of hill walking but are unsure about some of the detail? Perhaps you are always out with others that know what they are doing, but you would like the skills to be actively involved in the planning, navigating and decision making?

This is an ideal way to learn about all the equipment, understand and plan for the weather, become more competent and confident in your navigation and journeying techniques.

What You'll Do

A highly enjoyable and relaxed two days. The course is packed full of learning, practical experience and lots of fun. The delivery of the course caters for all levels of ability and knowledge from the novice all the way through to the regular hill walker.

You can expect to be out walking each day for around 4-5 hours this will be on footpaths or trails and in varied terrain. The days will involve as much learning opportunity as possible, so the pace of the day is friendly and will include plenty of breaks.

Course Highlights

Planning
How to successfully plan a hill walk in the UK or Ireland.
Walking skills
What things should you consider while out walking and what can make life easier (pace, nutrition, movement skills etc.).
Clothing and equipment
Being suitably dressed and equipped can make the difference between a great day out and a complete disaster. Weather – how it affects the hills and your day out.
Navigation in the hills
Everything from selecting a compass to navigation strategies and an intro to GPS.
Environmental knowledge
How to minimise your impact on the hill and information on good practice and useful organisations.
Hazards and emergency procedures in the hills
How to respond to any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency.

Location

We are lucky enough to be based in the beautiful Lake District National Park. Our courses are delivered at variety of locations, normally in the northern Lake District.

These courses are delivered 'on demand' and can be run from a local venue to you. Contact us to discuss.

There is no requirement to have previous experience to join this course as it is designed for the novice.
The weather can affect the order in which skills are covered meaning the itinerary can sometimes change.
