Who is the Rock Climbing Introduction Course For?

A Rock Climbing Introduction course is ideal for beginner climbers; those who have never climbed on rock and those with limited experience of climbing indoors.

What You'll Do

During the 8 hour course, you will have covered the essential course content in a safe and enjoyable outdoor environment and classroom-style setting;

Have climbed outside for a good proportion of the day on an appropriate crag
Be in a strong position to take a climbing wall belay test
it’s all about having fun! The course covers all the basic skills for rock climbing

Course Highlights

Background and Planning.
An awareness of the types of places you can climb in the UK and Ireland, how to use guidebooks and mobile devices to find crags and routes, crag etiquette and the work of the mountaineering councils.
Climbing Skills
Fundamental movement skills and climbing styles.
Footwear and Equipment
Footwear and equipment selection and how to use the kit you choose.
Technical Skills
Tying into a harness, belaying, spotting and how to abseil.
Environmental Knowledge
The impact of climbers at the crag, ethics, access and environmental considerations for climbers.
Hazards and Emergency Procedures
Identifying hazards, managing risk, understanding common injuries, how to get help and the role of Mountain Rescue and associated emergency services.

Location

We are lucky enough to be based in the beautiful Lake District National Park. Our courses are delivered at variety of locations, normally in the northern Lake District.

These courses are delivered 'on demand' and can be run from a local venue to you. Contact us to discuss.

Recommended Equipment

Warm outdoor wear which is comfortable to climb in - at all times of year e.g.

Walking trousers (shorts in summer), wicking base layers, fleeces which are comfortable to climb in
Warm hat
Gloves
Sun hat
Trainers or approach shoes
Day rucksack (approx. 30-40 Litres)
Small personal first aid kit
Water bottle and or Flask
Waterproof jacket and trousers
Lunch & Drink
High factor sunscreen
Midge repellent
Notebook and pen

Notes

There is no requirement to have previous experience to join this course as it is designed for the novice.
The weather can affect the order in which skills are covered meaning the itinerary can sometimes change.
