Honister Slate Challenge
Via Ferrata, Trekking & Ghyll Scrambling
Challenging you to an action-packed day in the ultimate base for adventure...
Event Summary
This epic challenge takes on 3 elements.
Test your endurance and skills on the Honister Slate Mine Via Ferrata, followed by traversing the long mountain ridges of Dale Head on a breathtaking trek. And wrapping the day up with one of the most popular activities in the Lake District: climbing into a wetsuit and sliding, swimming and jumping your way down Stoney Croft Ghyll.
Key Information
Via Ferrata
An adrenaline-filled adventure climbing / scrambling system using permanently fixed cable for protection up the rock face
Via Ferrata means 'iron path' and the iron route through the slate mine gives you a unique exploration of one of the last working mines in the UK. There is also the added excitement of traversing the 'Infinity' Burma bridges, scrambling up cargo nets and ascents up steep hard to reach cliff faces to the summit of Fleetwith Pike. The summit gives spectacular views across the Lake District and is a great way to build your confidence with heights and climbing.
Trekking
A steep 400m ascent up the impressive ridge line of Dale Head will earn you views overlooking Honister Slate Mine
The mountain section of the challenge starts from Honister Slate Mine. Your team will scale Dale Head, 400m straight up to gain Littledale edge, a exposed mountain ridge. The ridge is airy but gives incredible views across the Lake District. From the ridge you'll descend into the Newlands valley, the locations of Stoneycroft Ghyll.
Ghyll Scrambling
A wet, wild and exhilarating outdoor activity with swims, jumps, dives and slides
"Ghyll" is the Lakeland word for a mountain stream; Ghyll scrambling is an exhilarating activity for groups young and old. You'll climb up spectacular waterfalls, jump in to deep bubbling plunge pools, crawl through tunnels and slide down water polished rock chutes. A full-on wet and wild adventure for everyone!
Ghyll Scrambling, gorge walking or canyoning as its sometimes known as is one of the most popular activities in the area. There is no denying it, it's ours too.
