The Gables

This hiking circuit has remained popular amongst hikers and mountaineers alike for over 100 years thanks to its rich history and breathtaking landscape.

From Great Gable being the roots of early British rock climbing to many smugglers routes winding their way along the lower trails between Honister slate mines and the Ravenglass coast, used to transport slate and whiskey, the region is steeped in history and legend. Poignantly, you will see the Great War Memorial standing atop Great Gable, placed in memory of those who lost their lives in WW1. 

The landscape itself is pretty exceptional, with far-reaching views into Wasdale, Ennerdale, Buttermere and Borrowdale. A grand base for an adventure of the Gables. 

This well trodden trail gives you good footing, although a steep start to awaken your hill legs. With around 7 miles of hiking in total, the route is punchy and covers over 800m of elevation. 

This much-loved route begins from Seathwaite and takes in Green Gable at 801m before rising up to the second summit, Great Gable at 899m, via Windy Gap. 

A stunning trek that treats you to sprawling vistas and feels like you've had yourself a proper' day in the Lake District fells.
