The Triathlon Bug: Cheddar Edition

We caught up with Kay following the success of Race the Sun Cheddar whereby Kay and her buddies formed a team and participated in the challenge that saw them hike, bike and paddle across the gorgeous Cheddar landscape. On what was one of the hottest weekends of the year, participants started early to beat the heat and began their journey through the stunning gorge making the most of the shade while they could. Kay and her team Joy Riders arrived with such a bubbly energy and shared some awesome snaps of their day. We wanted to find out more about their event experience…

  • You and the team did so well taking on the Cheddar challenge. How did you train for the event?

“I carried out a combination of weight training, turbo sessions, running, long rides, swimming, SUP and yoga to build strength and endurance for the event. I found my motivation through organising to train with friends.”

  • That is a great shout. Sharing your training with buddies always helps make those long stints in the saddle more entertaining. Did you feel your preparation was sufficient for the challenge on the day?

“Yes, we felt well prepared as we had done lots of training and when it got to the day we felt ready! It certainly helped having already done two Race the Sun events before so we knew what to expect.”

  • Gosh you must have got the bug for it. We hope you come back for another round of adventure! When you happened upon the Race the Sun events what were your expectations and how did they compare?

“I was hoping for a hard physical challenge, a good atmosphere and stunning scenery. A triple whammy and it didn't disappoint!”

  • Cheddar is certainly stunning, and the atmosphere was electric with everyone being so supportive and determined. What are your takeaways from the whole experience?

The Race The Sun events are quite simply an amazing way to give yourself a fitness goal and provides the motivation to keep your training regularly, whilst also crucially raising money for an amazing cause.”

The Race the Sun series is in support of Action Medical Research. A charity that carries out life-changing research into children's diseases.

  • You have hit the nail on the head! With 3 Race the Suns under your belt (very impressive!) would you consider adding another location to your adventure CV or do you feel ready to hang your triathlon kit up?

“We are already talking about doing another one! With Brecon, Keswick and Cheddar under our belt we are thinking of taking on Coniston or the Jurassic coast next year! Watch this space!”

That is AWESOME. Huge well done to you and the Joy Riders for your truly tremendous efforts and we cannot wait to see you return next year for more. Good luck with your next stint of training.
