01.The Brief

Scarborough College typically have large cohorts for their DofE Gold award programme. They came to us with a request for us to support their own 'in-house' delivery of the expedition section within the Lake District National Park.

02.Our Approach

With Scarborough College we supplied qualified staff for their programme who were able to build upon the school's training of their participants and provide assessment of the section. In addition, we provided support with team route planning prior to the expedition. This allows the teams to plan their own routes and we check them against known difficulties in the area, providing feedback and suggested alternatives where appropriate.

03.The Programme Outcome

Scarborough College participants consistently display resilience and determination on their expedition. The model provides them with realistic expectations beforehand and a supportive and fair assessment process. The school continues to request the model.

We caught up with Grace Knill to hear why adventure and mental health go hand in hand.

"No Phone? No Way!" The Double Edge Sword of phones on DofE expeditions

According to Ofcom, 99% of children will own a mobile phone by age 11 and 98% of 16-24 year olds will own a smartphone. Teenagers average 3-6 hours of screen time each day with 12-15 year olds having a focus on social sites, primarily TikTok and Snapchat. As a DofE expedition provider, it is easy to see the difficulties when we ask young people to take themselves away from their phones and go offline for a few days. Can DofE expeditions balance the double edged sword that is phone technology to help more young people experience the outdoors?
