Training and Practice Expedition

Day 1: In-school Training day

Participants will receive a number of practical training sessions, covering essential Bronze DofE Expedition team skills.  

  • Route planning, navigation and map skills 
  • Equipment use and rucksack packing 
  • Campcraft (tents, stoves, food prep) 
  • Safety and basic first aid 

Day 2/3: Practice Expedition

Participants will navigate and follow their previously planned routes, accompanied by a DofE instructor – in an area near your school’s location.  Along the way, our instructors will support with additional teaching of practical skills and essential navigation techniques. 

On arrival at camp, instructors will supervise all cooking and camping activities, offering help and useful learnings as needed.  

At the end of the Practice Expedition, there will be time for feedback, review of the Expedition, noting successful achievements and a chance for students to ask questions ahead of their Qualifying Expedition.

Bronze Qualifying Expedition

Day 1: Qualifying Expedition

Topics covered:

  • Full kit checks on Expedition morning before leaving  
  • Route plan and maps check for 2-day Expedition route 
  • Remote supervision and meet-up points discussed 
  • Review of key navigation and emergency techniques 
  • Head into the hills for a brilliant Bronze Expedition adventure 
  • Camping for 1 evening – tent and camp craft skills 

Day 2: Qualifying Expedition 

  • Ongoing assessment by our qualified DofE assessors 
  • End of Expedition debrief and reporting 

As part of the Bronze Qualifying Expedition, teams will be continually observed and assessed, this will be done using a combination of remote supervision, as well as meeting up in person with our DofE accredited assessors.  GSM trackers are also given to each group as an additional safety measure and means of locating.  

A full debrief by the assessing instructors will be carried out with each team upon completion of the Expedition. This gives an opportunity for reflection, feedback, learnings, celebration of achievements and any questions the students might have.   

A full report is produced for each student, which is to be uploaded to their eDofE account as evidence of the Bronze Expedition Award completion.

    Our highly experienced instructor team will be supervising throughout the expedition. All of our staff are a minimum of Summer Mountain Leader qualified.
  • DofE Accredited Assessors
    For the Qualifying Expedition only - they will help participants feel supported and relaxed and encourage them towards completing the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Expedition.
  • Camping fees
    Camping will be on a campsite, sometimes with limited facilities.
  • GSM tracking devices
    In addition to our usual comprehensive supervision and safety management systems we also track each team with GSM trackers. This adds an additional level of safety for the participants. 
  • All administration and logistics.
  • 24 hour emergency back-up.
  • 1 free staff place for every 14 participants.

What do you need to arrange?

Our Bronze DofE Expedition package covers almost everything, however, we do require some input, planning and organising from the school or group.

  • Recruit as many participants as possible. We can assist with information on how to do this.
  • Complete any in-house administration within your organisation to authorise the Expedition. 
  • Keep in touch with participants, distribute information and ensure they are registered with DofE for the Bronze Award.
  • Plan transportation to and from the Expedition venue. This may be a coach or minibus. Some groups arrive by train to keep costs low.
  • We provide 1 free staff place for every 14 participants. They must attend the Expedition to ensure pastoral care for the participants.
